WHAT IS THIS?
WHAT IS THIS?
This is Shift Stories.
The kid in the photo thought life would be Lamborghinis and long road trips. The reality is a lot more desk time and a mix of cheap hatchbacks, press cars and whatever else I can get my hands on.
Shift Stories is my own corner of the internet for that side of things. Sometimes it is a car I have been testing. Sometimes it is a bit of news that gets under my skin. Always short, honest pieces, plus a simple audio clip recorded while it is still fresh in my head.
No press release talk. No fake hype. Just me trying to make sense of the car world we are in now.

Everyone tells me I need my own site and portfolio, so this is it. Shift Stories is where I put the car stuff that feels most like me.
If you want the full list of what I do, it is on my LinkedIn under Experience, but if you somehow cannot be bothered to do that. The short version is that I write news for Autoblog, longer pieces for The Intercooler as part of its young writer group, fleet and B2B content for Mortons Media clients, and classic car features for Bauer’s Classic Car Weekly. I am also a member of the Guild of Motoring Writers and won its Sir William Lyons Award for young writers in 2025.
If you like the way I write or talk about cars and want to work together, you can email me at contact@maxtayloroncars.com. That could be commissions, ideas for stories, or a car you would like me to get to know properly and write about from a young driver’s point of view.
Drop me a line and I will get back to you when I can.
Millbrook, SMMT test day, a few EVs first, then I asked for a go in the red Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida because I assumed “Alfa SUV” meant serious money. It didn’t. Nice inside, easy gearbox, but it felt a bit soft, looked like it was trying too hard, and I still wouldn’t spend new-car cash on a small SUV.
